Ecolinguistics in Brasília


ECOLINGUISTICS IN BRASÍLIA

The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of what has been done in Brasília (Brazil)* during the last 13 years in terms of ecolinguistics. In 1999 I finished a report on my postdoc program at CUNY (New York) and published it on the internet with the title of Contato interlinguístico: da interação à gramática (215 p.) (Interlingual contact: from interaction to grammar), available http://www.ecoling.unb.br/images/Formacao.pdf . This was certainly the first ecolinguistics monograph ever written in Brazil. Then I taught two courses at the graduate level and one at the undergraduate level on the subject, and supervised an M.A. thesis and, subsequently, a Ph.D. thesis by the same student (Fábio José Dantas de Melo) on the language/community of the Calon Gypsies living nearby Brasilia. In the present moment, I am supervising the research of three Ph.D. students. Altair Martins Gomes is working with the adaptation of rural dialect speakers to the speech of urban Brasília. Davi Borges de Albuquerque is investigating the language ecology of East Timor. Gilberto Paulino de Araújo is conducting research in an ex-maroon community of Northern Brazil. He investigates how members of this conservative community designates plant species of their environment, and whether this ethnobotanical knowledge is being transmitted to the new generations.
Eight years after the postdoc report I published a thick book (462 pages) of introduction to ecolinguistics (Couto 2007). It contains nine sections, with five to seven chapters each. One of its main innovation, if any, is the suggestion to include in ecolinguistics what has been done in ethnosciences, although up to a certain point this had already been done by the ecolinguist Mühlhäusler (2001). By the way, the volume in which his essay appeared is entirely dedicated to the subject (Maffi 2001). In 2009 I published a second ecolinguistics book (Couto 2009a) in which I explored the subject of 'language contact' in the framework of our discipline, emphasizing the movements of populations in space. In the same year, Elza K. N. N. do Couto, professor of the University of Goiânia, initiated a postoc program in Brasília under my supervision. She is investigating the language and culture of a small community of Kalderash Gypsies also from an ecolinguistic point of view. Right now she is teaching the course 'Ecolinguistics' to undergraduate students using my 2007 publication as a handbook. We are preparing a book on the language of this community.
We follow Haugen's definition of 'language ecology/ecology of language' almost literally, namely, "language ecology may be defined as the study of interactions between any given language and its environment". According to him, "the true environment of a language is the society that uses it" (Haugen 2001: 57). However, we do not use ecological concepts as metaphors. We DO ecology, once we study an 'ecosystem', namely, the 'language/linguistic ecosystem'. Following some investigators, we added two other 'environments' (beside the 'fundamental environment of language') to this, i.e., the mental, as in generative grammar, and the physical or natural environment, as in those philosophies of language that emphasize its referential side. Each of them is part of an ecosystem. Døør & Bang (1996) have a similar position. They say: "By environment we refer to the ideological environment (the mental organization), the biological environment (the physical organization), and the sociological environment (the social organization) in their dialectical relations". Following Makkai (1993) as well as some ideas of Peter Finke and Hans Strohner, we think that ecolinguistics should study not only the 'exoecology' of language but also its 'endoecology'. Nor should it be dedicated only to environmental questions because this is also possible to be done in the framework of discourse analysis, at least up to a certain point. In this sense, I began by studying the Portuguese prefixes 're-' and 'des-' (de-, un-). I concluded that semantically they represent two of three of our actions in the world, as illustrated with the French words faire (to do, do make), défaire (undo), refaire (redo). I also suggested that these actions represent the natural cycle of 'coming to life', 'dying out' and 'coming to life again', i.e., the recycling of matter. We also showed in the ecology of spatial relations that spatial expressions (in this case, spatial prepositions) represent the relations we detect in the world (see Couto 2009b). Temporal and ‘abastract’ relations are derived from them.
We concluded that it is not possible to study 'grammar' without reference to the environment of language, or its exoecology. Let us see two examples from syntax. First, the famous phrase Colorless green ideas sleep furiously, proposed by Chomsky in 1957. The reason for its strangeness is exactly the opposite of what he believed. It is because it does not correspond to anything in the world. Second, let us look at concord/agreement ("concordância" in Portuguese). We know that in every language it exists there is a tendency for its disappearance in certain contexts, such as popular dialects and some other informal registers of the language. In Portuguese, as well as in Italian and Spanish, the verb must agree in number with the subject, as in ‘Ele ama Maria’ (He loves Mary) X ‘Eles amam seu país’(They love their country), and the complements of the head noun inside a noun phrase must agree with it in number and gender, as in ‘O meu filho ([the] my son) X ‘Os meus filhos ([the] my sons’)/as minhas filhas ([the] my daughters). In rural and popular varieties of Brazilian Portuguese this agreement is highly simplified, with a tendency to maintain the number inflexion only on the determiner of the noun phrase in subject-verb agreement, i.e., ‘Os homem alto’ (the tall men) X ‘Os homens altos’ of Standard Portuguese.The subject-verb agreement tend to disappear in these circumstances: ‘As menina chegô’ (the small girls arrived) X ‘As meninas chegaram’ (the small girls arrived) in Standard Portuguese. The reason is that agreement is the result of a redundancy of inflexions, it is a marked feature. Whenever the pressure from the standard language relaxes, redundancies and marked features tend to disappear because they are not indispensable for communication. Other examples of 'endoecological' studies may be seen in my 2007 book.
In regard to exoecological phenomena, we have examined the contact between Portuguese and Spanish on the Brazilian-Uruguayan border, from the perspective of the ecology of language contact. In some points of this border there is a river separating the two sides but in others there is nothing between them. Our investigation concentrated in the small town of Chuí, or Chuy on the Uruguayan side. Most studies of language contact deal only with systems: interference of system A into system B or vice-versa. In fact, in Chuí/Chuy, Spanish is the dominant language, including on the Brazilian side. According to the ecology of communicative interaction, these interferences are not the most important aspects of language contact. What really matters is, first of all, how people in such a situation interact verbally and not verbally. In the end we can see that their utterances may be wholly in Spanish (the majority), wholly in Portuguese, in a mixture of both, or one person speaking in Spanish and the other answering in Portuguese, or vice-versa. In general, local people are not aware of whether they are speaking language A or B. They simply communicate according to the usual way of communicating in their community. In order to emphasize the dialectic interrelation between endoecology and exoecology of language, we begin with what came to be called the ecology of communicative interaction (Halliday used the expression 'The ecology of speech' in 1974, and Jørgen Bang talked about 'The ecology of communicative competence'). In fact, we know that what matters in the ecosystem is not the population of organisms nor its environment (habitat, niche, biotope) per se, but the interactions that obtain between organism and environment as well as between any two organisms of the population. The first type of interaction is corresponds to reference in language; the second, to communication. There are other homologies, such as the ones seen in the table reproduced below. As we can see in the above table of equivalences, language is homologue to ecological interactions. Therefore we see language as the way the members of the community (language community, speech community) communicate historically in their day-to-day lives. This is how Eugenio Coseriu as well as Salikoko Mufwene, among others, conceive of it. The linguistic ecosystem may be seen as language community (LC) or speech community (SP). Speech community (communauté de parole, Interaktionsgemeinschaft, kommunikationsgemeinschaft) is a small local community where verbal interactions take place on a day-to-day basis. As to language community (communauté de langue, Sprachgemeinschaft), it is the larger domain of the languistic ecosystem. It is language seen from the optic of the system. The language community of Portuguese comprises Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor. Speech communities are generally delimited by the investigator, as is the case with the ecological ecosystem at large. Thus, every local group of people whose members habitually interact between and among themselves may be considered a speech community, i.e., it may be delimited as such by the ecolinguist.
A speech communities may be monolingual, bilingual or multilingual. The first type may be called simple speech community’ when it is also monodialectal, whereas multidialectal, bilingual and multilingual SPs are complex speech communities. In other words, most language communities are complex. Simple communities are the exception, if they exist at all, not the rule.
Language contact happens in cases of bi-/multilingualism. By the way, language contact is simply communicative interaction (or attempt at it) among members of different language communities. It is a consequence of movement of populations from their original speech/language communities into another speech/language community. In short, it is a special kind of communication. Our approach to this subject is already hinted at above. Couto (1999, 2009a) are entirely dedicated to it.
Beside the authors mentioned above, our approach to ecolinguistics is also in line with what has been suggested by Adam Makkai, among others. Following Strohner (1996), who built on some ideas of Peter Finke, we have called this way of doing ecolinguistics ecosystemic linguistics (see Halliday's 'systemic-functional linguistics'). Strhoner presents ‘the computer metaphor', ‘the brain metaphor' and ‘the ecosystem metaphor'. According to him, the third metaphor is more in accordance with the needs of our time. We go further than that, since we do not use ecological concepst as metaphor. We study ecosystem, therefore our brand of ecolinguistics is ecosystemic linguistics. We think that ecosystemic linguistics complements the dominant trend in ecolinguistics sometimes called critical ecolinguistics, ecocritical linguistics, environmental linguistics etc.
In this ecosystemic trend of ecolinguistics, we postulated the three ecosystems of language mentioned above, namely the natural, the mental, and the social ecosystem of language. The natural ecosystem of language consists of a people (P), living in its territory (T) and speaking its own language (L). This triad represents the lay-person's conception. When s/he hears the name of an unknown language, the first question s/he asks is 'which people speaks it'. Upon hearing the answer, her/his second question is 'where do this people live'. The mental ecosystem of language consists of the mind/brain, more specifically of some neuronal connexions that take place in the left hemisphere. It has been studied by the neurosciences (neurolinguistics), psycholinguistics, connexionism and so on. In linguistics it is represented by Sydney M. Lamb's 'neurocognitive linguistics' (Lamb 2000). The social ecosystem of language is basically society. Haugen considered it, in our view wrongly, the only ecosystem of language.
Most theories of language reify it, considering it a thing located somewhere. Sometimes it is considered an instrument to do something as, for instance, to communicate, or as a closed and static organism or system. In this case the task of linguistics would be to describe its parts as well as the interactions that obtain among them. In our view, language is seen as a specific type of interaction or interrelationships, taking place in the natural ecosystem of language, sometimes in the mental or in the social, depending on the question we ask. If we ask whether language is a biological (natural) phenomenon (Schleicher, Chomsky), the answer is yes. If we ask whether it is mental (Chomsky), the question is also yes. Finally, if we ask whether it is a social phenomenon (sociolinguistics), the answer is in the affirmative. Integrating the three points of view, we might say that language is a biopsychosocial phenomenon. As I argued elsewhere (Couto to appear), ecolinguistics may be considered as a platform from which we can study any language phenomena from a unified point of view, 'the ecological point of view'.
Contrary to what has sometimes been said, and could be suggested by the above table, ecolinguistics does not transfer concepts from ecology in a mechanical and naive manner. These ecological concepts are used in a new context where they are reinterpreted and used for purposes slightly different from the biological ones. The new domain in which they are used is much broader than their domain in biology. To begin with, in ecolinguistics there is not only the natural (physical, biological) ecosystem but also the mental and the social ecosystem. There is a philosophical and a social side to ecology itself. Language is an ecology, consists of many ecosystems. Therefore, we study a special type of ‘ecosystem’, namely the linguistic/language ecosystem.
One question that might be asked is 'Why ECOlinguistics?' It has been discussed at length by competent scholars like Alwin Fill and Peter Finke, inter alia. The latter used the expression 'from the ecological point of view', which should be used instead of Quine's 'from a logical point of view'. In an age of diminishing diversity, both in nature and in culture, it is important to keep in mind that language is linked to life, not only because some authors consider it to be homologized to biological interactions but also because it is a parasite (or viral) species of the population (people), as Mufwene (2001) put it. It is an ecosystem in its own right. Døør & Bang (2001) are more specific on the subject. According to them "many linguists [...] do not seem to understand that linguistics is a life-science in general, and a life-science of and for human linguistic communication in particular". As Fritjof Capra argued, ecology is in sync with modern science (relativity theory, quantum mechanics), which has shown that the world is a web of interrelationships, not a whole composed of smaller parts. Besides this, in face of the growing degradation of the life resources on earth it is wise for even linguists to practice their science with an awareness of this fact. This is what we ecolinguists try to do.
Finally, I would like to add that unfortunately we have not yet explored the ecology of language learning, although my Ph.D. student Ronaldo Lima Jr. is beginning to work on it. In the near future we intend to stimulate other students to investigate it.

0. Introduction
Despite the fact that Haugen is rightly considered the “father” of ecolinguistics, the definition based on his ideas has several problems. First, it implies a reification of language. Second, it sees language in relation to only the social environment. Third, he uses ecological concepts as mere metaphors. Fourth, he excludes what Makkai (1993) called endoecology of language, namely, structural/grammatical phenomena from the domain of what would turn out to be ecolinguistics. My purpose in this essay is to show that the way we are doing ecolinguistics in Brasilia avoids all these problems.    
The members of the Brasilia School of Ecolinguistics see language as a web of interactions, not a thing related to its environment and whose function is communication. Further, there is not only an “environment of language”, but at least four. They are the locus of the interactions that make up language. We see language as embedded in ecosystems (its exoecologies) and containing ecosystems in its interior. This means that it is part of general ecology, and is ecology in itself. This means that ecosystemic linguistics does not use ecological concepts as metaphors. Finally, ecosystemic linguistics is a viewpoint from which it is possible to study both exoecological and endoecological phenomena.
Section 1 of this essay will be dedicated to the discussion of why ecolinguistics is an ecological discipline. At least in the way we do it in Brasilia (ecosystemic linguistics) it is clearly a part of general ecology on a par with biological ecology. In section 2 language will be seen as the verbal interactions that take place inside the language ecosystem. In other words, this section will give an overview of the ecology of communicative interaction, which is seen as the core of language. Section 3 gives hints at how endoecological phenomena (grammar, structure) can be approached from an ecolinguistic point of view. In sections 4 and 5, some exoecological phenomena that can be dealt with will be mentioned, such as those originally suggested by Haugen as well as those seen in Alwin Fill’s work. Section 6 gives an overview of what has been done by members of the Brasilia School of Ecolinguistics. It is pointed out that ecosystemic ecolinguistics is a different way of doing linguistics, roughly in line with Peter Finke’s ideas. Finally there are the Concluding Remarks in section 7.

1. Ecological and Linguistic Ecosystem: Ecosystemic Linguistics
Let me begin by discussing the basic concepts of general ecology. It is well known that its central concept is ecosystem. This consists of a population (P) of organisms and their interactions (I) with the environment or territory (T) as well as among themselves. The linguistic ecosystem has the same structure. It consists of a population of individuals, or a people (P), living in a certain place, which is their territory (T), and interacting among themselves by means of the traditional way of interacting, i.e., their language (L), equivalent to the interactions of the biological ecosystem (I=L). The organism-environment (world) interactions of the biological ecosystem are equivalent to signification, reference or denotation in the linguistic ecosystem. The organism-organism interactions are equivalent to communication. The interactions among phonemes forming a syllable, of morphemes forming words, of words forming phrases and of phrases forming sentences are equivalents of the relations that obtain in the internal ecology of organisms, that is, among organs, cells and so on, as was suggested by Trampe (1990: 84, 123).
Ecosystemic linguistics does not pick up concepts from biological ecology and insert them in language studies, a position first criticized by Garner (2004). Contrary to traditional ecolinguistics, which uses them as mere metaphors, ecosystemic linguistics sees language as a part of general ecology, as is the case with other social sciences, such as environmental sociology, environmental psychology, ecological anthropology and so on. Ecosystemic linguists do a specific kind of ecology, namely, linguistic ecology, an alternative name for ecolinguistics.
Alwin Fill shows that there are two main strands of research in ecolinguistics. In the first, “‘ecology’ is understood metaphorically and transferred to ‘language(s) in an environment’”. It was originally suggested by Haugen in 1970. Among the other researchers of this line he also mentions Peter Finke, Wilhelm Trampe and, up to a certain point, Adam Makkai, as well as some others such as Jørgen Chr. Bang and Jørgen Døør. According to the second view, “‘ecology’ is understood in its biological sense; the role of language in the development and aggravation of environmental (and other societal) problems is investigated; linguistic research is advocated as a factor in their possible solution” (Fill 2001: 43). The starting point of this view was a talk given by Halliday at the AILA 1990 Conference, reproduced in Halliday (2001). This trend is also followed by Richard Alexander, Andrea Gerbig, Andrew Goatly, Martin Döring and many others. In an earlier version of Fill’s paper (Fill 1996b: 14), he suggests a possible dialectical integration of the two approaches in a kind of “integrational ecolinguistics” (integrative Ökolinguistik). Ecosystemic linguistics is also “integrational”, although it does not transfer concepts from one side to the other. On the contrary, it sees ecolinguistics as a branch of general ecology, to the point that, as we have just seen, an alternative name for it is linguistic ecology (ecologia linguistica, in Portuguese), in which ‘ecology’ is the head of the noun phrase, whereas ‘linguistic’ is the complement. A good German term for it would be Sprachökologie.
Albert Bastardas i Boada and Norman Denison also deal with the distribution of languages in space and their interactions from an ecosystemic perspective. According to Bastardas i Boada (2000: 22, my translation), “the existence of linguistic varieties is approached from the ecosystemic point of view”. According to him, “linguistic systems are probably in a state of unstable equilibrium, given their condition of open systems – exchanging information and energy with their environs” (p. 89). A question not asked by him is why Catalan shares some features with Spanish and others with French, a fact that is due to its being between the two. Denison (2001) investigated the languages of Europe as constituting a vast ecosystem (ecology).
The idea of language as an ecosystem embedded in a wider ecosystem is implied in practically every writing by Peter Finke, at least in those I know of. He is followed by his former student Wilhelm Trampe, who used the term “linguistic ecosystems” (linguistische Ökosysteme) (Trampe 1990; 11). However, as far as I could investigate, the first author to use the term “ecosystemic linguistics” in print, albeit following ideas put forward by Finke, was Hans Strohner. He presents ‘the computer metaphor', ‘the brain metaphor' and ‘the ecosystem metaphor'. According to him, the third metaphor is more in accordance with the needs of our time. The expression ökosystemische Sprachwissenschaft appears in the title of his paper (Strohner 1996). In the Methology section of the paper the alternative expression ökosystemische Linguistik appears four times. In this connection it is of interest to mention Halliday’s “systemic-functional grammar”. Ecosystemic linguistics recognizes three language ecosystems, namely, the natural, the mental and the social. The three are included in the all-encompassing integral ecosystem of language, formerly called "fundamental ecosystem of language". Let me briefly discuss each of them.
On the road from nature to culture, the first ecosystem to be mentioned is the natural ecosystem of language. It is exactly parallel to the biological ecosystem, as we saw above. It consists of a people (P1), whose members live in their community’s territory (T1) and speak their own language (L1). Inside this ecosystem, P1 and T1 form the natural environment of language. This environment is the locus where the physical, natural and/or biological interactions of language take place. In this case, P1 and T1 are concrete entities, so that P1 could be exemplified by the Tukano people of the Upper Rio Negro in Brazil, T1 represents the territory where this people is located, and L1 is its specific language, Tukano. Everything having to do with language as a natural-biological phenomenon belongs here. This is the first of four linguistic ecosystems. For this reason it was indicated by the index 1.
The second ecosystem is the mental ecosystem of language. If we understand mind as the functioning of the brain, we may represent it with P2, a part of ‘people/person’. These are fundamentally the neuronal connections where language is formed, stored and processed. The locus of the mental interactions (mind), i.e., the brain, may be represented by T2. L2 represents language as a mental phenomenon. P2 and T2 together, especially former, make up the mental environment of language. The knowledge of inter-word, inter-morphemic (morphosyntax) and inter-phonemic (phonology) interactions as well as the knowledge of rules in general belongs to this ecosystem. It is the only one recognized by generative grammar, as well as by other mental theories of language.  
The third ecosystem is the social ecosystem of language. It consists of the totality of the individuals of the community qua social beings, inter-individualities or inter-subjectivities. In this ecosystem, L3 represents language as a social phenomenon. P3 represents all the social individuals who constitute the collectivity. T3 represents the “organization” where this collectivity is located, in short, it is the locus of the social interactions via language, that is to say, society. Collectivity plus society constitute the social environment of language.
These three ecosystems are embedded in the all-encompassing integral ecosystem of language. It consists of people (P), territory (T) and language (L) at large, not of a specific P, T or L, as in the case of the natural ecosystem of language. This ecosystem is also known by at least two alternative designations. The first is foundational ecosystem of language because it also corresponds to the lay-person’s view of language. When he/she hears the name of a language for the first time, the first question to come to his/her mind is: “Which people (P) speaks it?” Upon hearing the answer, the second question is: “Where (T) do this people live?”.   
I would like to add that these triads (P, T, L) are not only reminiscent of Peirce’s sign components but also of Trampe’s (1990: 190) interpretation of ideas by Albert Bandura and Kurt Lewin. Trampe’s P of Person ‘people’ corresponds to population or people. His V, of Verhalten ‘behavior’, corresponds to L. Finally, the U of Umwelt ‘environment, territory’ in his figure is homologous to territory.
All the discussion in this section shows that most theories of language are partial. Some of them focus only on the relation between language and world, emphasizing  reference. This tradition sees only the relationships involving the natural environment of language. Other theories consider language as an exclusively mental phenomenon, as does generative grammar and the whole philosophical tradition it is based on. They deal only with the interactions between language and its mental environment. Finally, there are theories of language for which language is an exclusively social phenomenon, as is the case with modern sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. Although this point of view is frequently shared by common sense, it is partial too. From the ecosystemic-ecolinguistic point of view, language is all that. It is a biopsychosocial phenomenon.
Outside linguistics, these distinctions are relatively common. For example, Guattari (1989) recognizes three “écologies” (= ecosystems), namely, the environmental (natural), the social and the mental. These are included in an “écosophie”, which is different from Arne Naess’ ecosophy. In any case it corresponds to the integral ecosystem of language. Using the term “ecology” instead of “ecosystem”, the Brazilian philosopher Boff (2012) shows himself a bit more "ecosystemic" because he talks about four ‘ecologias”, namely, the “environmental/natural”, the “mental” and the “social” ecology. The three are enclosed in the “integral ecology”, again equivalent to the integral ecosystem of language. In the realm of ecolinguistics, Jøgen Døør and Jørgen Christian Bang are probably the only ones to come close to our view. They recognize at least the first three ecosystems in their “three dimensions”, that is, “bio-logics” (natural), “ideo-logics” (mental) and “socio-logics” (social), as can be seen all along Bang & Døør (2007), but first presented in Døør & Bang (1996). 
The integral ecosystem of language, or community, may be seen from two different perspectives, namely, speech community and language community. Speech community (French: communauté de parole, German Sprechgemeinschaft, Interaktionsgemeischaft, Kommunikationsgemeinschaft) consists of a few people (P), sharing a place -- a small territory (T) -- and interacting on a daily basis by means of the usual internal way of interacting (L). Wherever there are people communicating this way there is a speech community. As is the case with biological ecosystems, speech community is delimited by the investigator. Its size may range from only speaker and hearer in conversation, a minimal speech community, to a whole continent or more, as is the case with the totality of regions of the world where people communicate in  Portuguese (Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor), a maximal speech community. This maximal speech community is a language community (Sprachgemeinschaft). It comprizes all the regions of the world where the language in question is used, resembling the biomes of biological ecology, as is the case with taiga, tundra and rainforest, whose limits are not defined by the investigator. They are roughly  there -- in nature --, independently of ecologists.   A speech community may be simple or complex. Complex speech communities obtain where the linguistic ecosystem is bi-/multilingual and/or multidialectal. Simple speech communities are monolingual and monodialectal. However, these are the exception, not the rule. 
As to language community, it is the regions of the world whose inhabitants know that the local way of communicating is language x, whether it is presently used or not. Up to a certain point, it is equal to the maximal speech community. In summary, language community is language seen from the perspective of the system, whereas in speech community it is seen from the perspective of communicative interaction.
Finally, I would like to give a concrete example that illustrates the usefullness of these concepts. For example, in Southern África,  Sesotho (L) roughly means the way members of the Basotho people (P), who lives in the Lesotho country (T), communicate. 
     
2. The Ecology of Communicative Interaction
As Eugenio Coseriu has always emphasized, language is basically communicative interaction (habla). More precisely, interaction is the core of language. The system is an abstraction drawn from it by the linguist (Coseriu 1967). Even grammar exists to facilitate understanding during communicative interactions. In certain circumstances there may be some understanding even in the absence of a common grammar. This can be seen in attempts at communication, such as in inter-lingual contacts. If the parties share at least a small list of words, a precarious understanding can take place, as was certainly the case with the first contacts that led do the formation of pidgins and creoles.
The ecology of communicative interaction comprises a setting or scenario, whose components vary from one case to the other. Among the fixed components we have a speaker (I) and a hearer (YOU), who are parties in the communicative interaction, or dialogue. If the speaker includes the hearer, we have inclusive WE. He may also include the person(s) who is(are) on his side, that is, S/HE1 as well those who are on the side of the hearer, namely, S/HE2. The sum of the two gives THEY. If the speaker includes only S/HE1, and excludes YOU, we have exclusive WE. If he does include YOU we have inclusive WE. All these deictic forms, except I, may be replaced by all the nouns of the language. In this vein, pronouns do not replace nouns, but the other way round, it is the nouns that replace pronouns because language was born and exists in acts of communicative interaction.
Spatial, temporal and modal deixis also belong here. For instance, here, now and this way are associated with I. In other words, the whole lexicon of the language emerges out of the ecology of communicative interaction. There are also the verbs designating actions, and the adjectives qualifying the entities, besides linking words such as prepositions and conjunctions.
Another type of component of communicative interaction is some rules that make understanding possible. Ecosystemic linguistics recognizes at least two types of rules, namely systemic and interactional rules. Systemic rules are basically the rules of grammar. They are studied by structural theories, like generative grammar. Interactional rules are less studied in linguistics. However, conversation analysis, Grice’s maxims, Austin’s speech acts with their performative values, as well as sociological theories of social action and philosophical action theory touch on them occasionally. Grice’s cooperative principle has to do with what in ecosystemic linguistics is called communion, that is, a mindset that keeps two or more people together, and happy with this simple being together. It is a prerequisite for successful communication. Communion is a special type of communication, which Malinowski called “phatic communion”. The speaker expresses him/herself the way s/he thinks will be understood by the listener, whereas the listener interprets the speaker’s words the way s/he thinks was intended by the speaker. Without communion there is no communicative interaction. It is not enough to share rules. A willingness to communicate is also necessary.    
Let us come back to interactional rules. Some of them are highly culture-dependent. Some others have a universal or near-universal character. Each culture has its own set of rules. Up to now, we have come up with about 13 interactional rules for Brazilian Portuguese. They must be strictly obeyed if communication is to flow smoothly. They are the following:

1) Speaker and hearer must be near one another, roughly one meter (this is culture-bound).
2) The exchange must be face-to-face.
3) Speaker and hearer must look at the face of one another, if possible at the eyes.
4) Every appeal must be complied with.
5) Both appeal and compliance must be formulated in a cooperative, harmonious, solidary tone.
6) Every appeal must be preceded by a kind of pre-appeal, a vocative, such as please!, hi!
7) Turn-taking is obligatory, although sometimes speaker and hearer speak simultaneously, which is not welcome (culture-bound).
8) If the subject is serious, speaker and hearer must show this in their facial expression; if it is light, a sign of lightness, as a smile, is welcome.
9) Speaker and hearer must keep themselves attentive during the interaction, without distractions, “side lookings” and so on.
10) Especially on telephone speaker and hearer must signal that they are there (hm-hm, OK, yes)
11) The interaction may not be interrupted abruptly. The participant who intends to end it must signal his/her intention.
l2) As a rule, it is he/she who began the interaction that should end it. The contrary would look non-cooperative, non-harmonious.
13) Systemic rules (grammar, structure).

As we can see, grammar (systemic rules) is a part of interactional rules because they, too, exist in order to enhance understanding. Conventional linguistics sees these two types of rules the other way round. According to them, conversation is possible only as putting into action the "rules" of grammar. Whenever a member of the community wants to address another, he picks some of these "rules", forms "phrases" and send them to the hearer, inverting what Coseriu had shown several decades ago. The communicative interaction itself is the exchange of an appeal by the speaker and a compliance by the hearer. The most “primitive” appeal is command. Cases like get out! and leave me alone! may also be rendered only by gestures and/or physical action (jostling, shoving, push). A second type of appeal is question, which requires an answer. A third type is vocative, a kind of calling the potential hearer to get in communion with the speaker, so that communicative interaction becomes possible. A fourth type is exclamation. The fifth is information (declarative sentence), which is a response to an appeal or request, even if tacit. We only give a piece of information to somebody else when s/he asks for it or when we think s/he needs it. If s/he were aware of the fact that s/he needed this information, s/he would ask for it.  In general all information or declarative sentence is an answer to a (tacit) question (Maas 1977). These exchanges occur in the dialogue, or flow of communicative interaction.
In summary, seeing language from the ecology of communicative interaction avoids some pitfalls. First of all, we can see that language does not interact with environment directly. It is the members of the people who interact among themselves in it. Language is a specific type of interaction that takes place inside the linguistic ecosystem. As Fill (1993: 5) put it, language is not the river but the current, the flow, itself (das Fliessen selbst). The second most important consequence of this view is that language is not reified. It is not a “thing” interacting with its environment. The third is that language is not an instrument (a thing) of communication. It is communication. 
 
3. The endoecology of Language
We know that in biological ecology organisms are not only part of an ecosystem; they have ecosystems inside themselves. Most ecolinguists have dealt exclusively with exoecological interactions. Linguistic ecology, an alternative name for ecosystemic linguistics, tries to study language from all sides, as far as possible, albeit using different methodologies wherever needed, as indicated by Garner (2004). Like all ecological disciplines, ecosystemic linguistics is multidisciplinary. It includes the endoecology of language in its domain, namely, structural subjects, including lexicon, grammar and semantics.
Finke (1996: 38) said that “language […] has a structural organization ecosystemically describable”. According to him, language rules emerges out of so-called laws of nature (p. 40). He explicitly mentions phonetics, phonology, syntax and semantics (p. 41). Elsewhere he says that “in ecolinguistics, the mere analysis of talk on environmental issues – which is sometimes taken to be the subject of ecolinguistics – in my opinion falls short of the possibilities and necessities for a creative innovation of ecolinguistics” (Finke  2001: 88). In Mühlhäusler (2003) there are interesting reflections on grammar from an ecolinguistic point of view. Trampe (1990: 84) says, referring to Bateson: “let us compare grammar with the anatomy of an organism, a plant for example". Some pages below he adds that “languages are simply part of language-world-systems. Grammar is a system based on biological design, according to which linguistic elements must combine” (p. 123).
Several endoecological subjects have been dealt with by members of the Brasília School of Ecolinguistics as can be seen in section 6. One of them is semantics, illustrated with spatial prepositions. Another is syntax, especially the order of constituents and/or agreement among them, as in the case of person and/or gender agreement in Portuguese. In morphology, some word formation processes have been investigated, as the prefixes re-/des- (re-de/un) as well as the shortening of circumlocutions to a disyllabic word. However, one of the most investigated domains is the lexicon.
Ecosystemic linguistics includes grammar in its object of study, but as an aid communicative interaction. Let us take a look at the famous phrase Colorless green ideas sleep furiously, proposed by Chomsky in 1957. The reason for its strangeness is exactly the opposite of what he believed: it is because it does not correspond to anything in the world. As the “first” Wittgenstein would say, it does not describe anything outside language.
 
4. The exoecology of Language
Ecolinguistics was born as a reaction against structuralist exclusive endoecological approach. This is clear in Alwin Fill’s early works. The subjects Haugen suggested are all exoecological. In a perfunctory survey of extant readings in ecolinguistics, I could see that about 62%  of them are some kind of discourse analysis. Circa 94% of the texts published in the excellent site www.ecoling.net moderated by Arran Stibbe also have to do with discourse analysis.
Ecosystemic linguistics also privileges exoecological questions. Departing from the ecosystem and its components and features, the most diverse subjects have been investigated. One of them is the ecology of languages, as was done by Denison (2001), Bastardas i Boada (2000), Calvet (1999) and many others. Among the subjects that have been dealt with under this heading, we could mention bilingualism and multilingualism, language contact (including pidginization and creolization), language planning, language policy, Sprachbund phenomena and so on (Haugen 1972). Couto (2009) is dedicated to the ecology of language contact.
Another topic that has been approached from an exoecological optic is the ecology of language evolution. Mufwene (2001) is one of its most conspicuous representatives, although he does not consider himself an ecolinguist. However, the title of his book speaks for itself. His point of departure is population genetics. Homologizing language with species, not organism, he sees the causes of evolution in the Darwinian ideas of competition and selection, via imperfect replication of the language by each generation. Finke (2008) also investigates questions such as the memory of language, together with cultural evolution.       
Language ethnoecology also belongs to the realm not only of ecosystemic linguistics. The group of investigators gathered around the NGO Terralingua is a case in point, as can be seen in the essays published in Maffi (2001).  Couto (2007: 219-280) has suggested that language ethnoecology be incorporated in ecosystemic linguistics.
Language acquisition is an important side of language phenomena. Ecolinguists have hardly dealt with it but the ecology of language acquisition must be incorporated in linguistic ecology. Outside ecolinguistics we have a few investigations as those discussed in the several papers contained in Kramsch (2002) and Leather & van Dam (2003). Closely associated with language acquisition is the general discipline of applied linguistics, in whose context ecolinguistics was born in Europe. The subtitle of one of the latest collective books (Fill & Penz 2007) is Essays in Applied Ecolinguistics. Fill himself is a specialist in the area. Finally, the famous and thought-provoking conference paper of Halliday (2001) was delivered at an AILA meeting (see Halliday 2001).   
Topics of environmental linguistics have had a privileged place in ecolinguistics, albeit under names such as critical ecolinguistics and ecocritical linguistics. Ecosystemic linguists are developing a specific type of discourse analysis, namely ecological discourse analysis. This will be discussed in the next section.
 
5 Ecological Discourse Analysis
Most trends in discourse analysis are firmly rooted in ideology, especially Marxist ideology, and power relations. Ecological discourse analysis (EDA) takes a radically different position. Instead of ideology and power relations, it bases itself on the preservation of life on earth and on an avoidance of suffering. Its theoretical sources are Arne Naess’ deep ecology and Gandhi’s ideas. Since ideologies are inevitable, EDA departs from an ideology of life, ecological ideology, or ecoideology (Couto 2013). From here on it is possible to end up in political ideologies.  
Let us see the case of a woman suffering in the hands of a drunken husband who beats her constantly. EDA defends her not for being a woman, not exactly in the name of feminism, but because she is a human (and animal) being who is suffering. Defending her from the point of view of feminism would be a kind of discrimination from the upside down or the wrong way round. The EDA sees in the man her partner, not her antagonist.
The same principle applies to cases of infanticide among some ethnic groups of Brazil. Ecological discourse analysts are against this practice because it implies the maximum suffering, death. Some anthropologists say that we cannot interfere because it is generally an ancient cultural practice. For EDA, however, cultural practices can change along history, whereas death is irreversible. Besides that, these groups are already totally or partially acculturated. Whenever possible, we ought to save children from this practice. If possible without causing suffering in the community.
There is not only physical suffering, but also mental (torture) and social suffering, as when a person is ridiculed publicly. In this case, we must ponder which suffering is the hardest (for more on EDA, see the in this blog especially dedicated to it).
  
6. The Brasília School of Ecolinguistics
The starting point for the Brasilia School of Ecolinguistics was Couto (1999), in which the subject ‘ecolinguistics’ was discussed for the first time in Brazil. Then two courses were taught at the graduate level and one at the undergraduate level, respectively. Two M.A. theses and, subsequently, two Ph.D. theses were written. At the present moment, there are several Ph.D. students working on ecolinguistic subjects. One of them is working on the adaptation of rural dialect speakers to the speech of urban Brasília2. A second one is investigating Portuguese in the language ecology of East Timor3. A third one is conducting research in an ex-maroon community of northern Brazil4. He investigates how members of this conservative community designate plant species of their environment, and whether this ethnobotanical knowledge is being transmitted to new generations. 
The next undertaking was the publication of Couto (2007), a thick book giving an overview of ecosystemic-linguistic subjects. One of its main innovations, if any, is the suggestion to include in ecolinguistics what has been done in ethnosciences, although this had already been done by the ecolinguist Mühlhäusler (2001) as well as by most contributors to Maffi (2001). In 2009, I published a second ecolinguistics book (Couto 2009), which tries to show how language contact can be handled in the framework of our discipline, with an emphasis on the movement of populations in space. In the same year, Elza K. N. N. do Couto, professor at the University of Goiânia, initiated a postdoc program in Brasília under my supervision. She investigated the language and culture of a small community of Kalderash Gypsies. She introduced ecolinguistics as a regular discipline of the graduate program of linguistics. She is also supervising several theses on ecolinguistics subjects.

7. Concluding Remarks.
In summary, for ecosystemic linguistics, ecolinguistics is a new way of doing linguistics. This means that the investigator can deal with any language phenomena, even using the same methodology s/he used before, because ecolinguistics is multi-methodological. The difference lies in the fact that s/he conducts her/his research from a unified point of view, the ecological point of view, as suggested by Finke (2008).

In general referring do Haugen (1972), Ecolinguistics is generally defined as the study of the interactions (inter-relations) between language and its environment. Both the prefix 'eco-' and this definition of the discipline point towards biological Ecology. In Ecology, 'environment' is part of an ecosystem, i.e., it is the place where a species or a group of species live together and its members interact among themselves. The 'ecosystem', on its turn, consists of a population of organisms together with the inter-relations (interactions) with the habitat, ecological niche, biotope or territory, depending on the point of view, as well of the interactions of individual organisms between and among themselves. Since the expression 'environment' has been the object of misunderstanding as, for instance, that Ecolinguistics would deal only with environmentalism, I believe that a more adequate definition of our discipline could be that it is the study of the interactions between language and its social, mental and natural context (environment). Another possibility of saying the same thing could be: Ecolinguistics is the study of the linguistic inter-relations that obtain at the social, mental and natural level. These last two definitions avoid a reification of language, as will be clear below, I think.
We know that 'ecosystem' is the central concept of Ecology. To the point that the latter could just as well be called Ecosystemics (parallel to "phonemics" and “proxemics”, for instance), without any conceptual loss. On the other hand, Ecology could also be defined as "the study of ecosystems", because everything in it emerges out of the ecosystem. This is the case with characteristics and/or features as is the case with (a) interaction, (b) diversity, (c) openness, (d) holism, (e) adaptation, (f) ecological succession/evolution, and (g) long term view. Let us take a look at each of them in order to understand the importance of the ecological viewpoint in the study of linguistic phenomena.
It is important to stress the point that language is part of an ecosystem, its 'exoecology', but it contains ecosystems inside itself, its 'endoecology', to use Makkai's (1993) terminology. To linguistic exoecology would belong the relationships between/among languages, between language and its users as well as between language and territory (or natural world). The endoecological relationships are basically what has been called the 'language system'. In this case we would have, among others, the 'syntactic ecosystem', the 'morphological ecosystem', the 'phonological ecosystem' and, maybe, a 'phonetic ecosystem', as is done in Neurocognitive Linguistcs, formerly known as 'Stratificational Grammar' (see Lamb 1966, 2000; Couto 1982). Sometimes we hear even expressions such as 'ecology of grammar', 'hologramar' (Steffenson 2008), 'ecology of text' and so on. Taking into consideration the fact that the lexicon is structured (in semantic fields, for example), probably we could also talk about an 'ecology of the lexicon'.
Let us begin with the concept of INTERACTION. It is not the population of organisms nor their habitat that is relevant for the definition of ecosystem. The organisms are the subject of Biology and of Genetics; their habitat or territory, could studied by Geography and similar sciences. The object of study of the ecologist is the inter-relations that take place inside the ecosystem, both (a) the organism-habit interactions and (b) the organism-organism interactions. The former (a) are equivalent to 'signification' (reference, denotation) whereas the latter (b) homologizes to communication (communicative interaction). Interaction is the basis of everything in Ecology and, consequently, in the ecosystem. It is also the basis for the ecolinguistic definition of language which is given elsewhere in this paper. Practically everything that is said of language and languages is based on it. In summary, in accordance with modern science, such as Relativity Theory and Quantum Mechanics, the whole world is an immense web of inter-relations. There are affinities even with some more recent trends in the sciences, as is the case with Systems Theory, Prigogine's Dissipative Structures and, maybe, fractals (see the iteration especially in phrase and text construction!). After all, the concept of interaction is present in the definition of the remaining characteristics and/or features of the ecosystem, as we will see in what follows.
The ecosystemic approach shows us that language is basically interaction. The interactions that make language up are inside the 'linguistic ecosystem'. There are several bundles of interactions, which are 'ecosystems' in their own right, i.e., endoecological ecosystem. Since it is ECOsystem, it is 'system'. To put it simply, it is a structure, albeit an open one, a dissipative structure. It is a system in the sense of Chaos Theory and of Quantum Mechanics. This is accepted even by the late Saussurean structuralist Eugenio Coseriu (Coseriu 1979).
DIVERSITY is also very important for the vitality of an ecosystem. The more variety of species there is in its interior the more vital it is; the less species, the more fragile. For instance, an ecosystem like the Amazonian biome is highly resistant. So much so that the disappearance of one species is replaced with one of the thousands of other species that exist in its domain. An ecosystem with only three or two species (predator and prey, for instance) will fatally disappear as soon as one or the other of them disappear. This is the case not only with nature, but also with culture, including language. For example, if India had only one language like Hindi, it would be culturally much poorer than it is with its over 16 official languages, besides many minority ones.
Diversity is important not only to recognize multilingualism, like India's, but also multidialectalism as well as any kind of diversity in the domain of language. In this sense, we cannot say that the language of, say, the hillbillies is wrong. It the way the members of their communities communicate among themselves. If understanding obtais, any utterance whatsoever is not error. As the ecolinguist Adam Makkai once said, "grammatical is what occurs". The slangs or the youth, of ghettoes are also perfectly legitimate.
In regard to OPENNESS, sometimes also called "porosity" or "permeability", it has a lot to do with the idea of dissipative structures. Every ecosystem leaks. It gives and receives energy and information to/from adjacent ecosystems. There is a constant flow of energy among them due mainly to the fact that there are no clearly delimited natural limits (no fence) between/among them, but a continuum. The ecosystem is delimited by the observer, who establishes an imaginary line separating the ecosystem s/he will investigate from the environing ones. In spite of that, it is structured because it is an 'ecoSYSTEM'. The interactions that can be seen inside it follow some principles, they are not entirely random. The same happens to languages. All languages of the world influence and are influenced by other languages. The idea of a "purê" and "uncontaminated" language is squarely a fiction.
HOLISM has to do with the fact that, once delimited by the observer, the ecosystem is regarded as a whole, even when attention is focused on one specific species or even on only one specimen. S/he studies the inter-relations of this specimen (or this species) with the whole ecosystem s/he delimited. In the case of language, there are inter-relations between syntax and intonation as well as morphology, phonology and even with the lexicon, even if generative grammar denies the fact. In some sense, syntax is related even to the ecology of communicative interaction.
The idea of ADAPTATION is very important for the survival of the species and of each specimen of organism that make it up. Darwin emphasized 'competition' and the 'survival of the fittest'. However, more recently scientists have come to the conclusion that the species that have more chances of survival are those that adapt themselves the most to new circumstances. One good example is the cockroach. It exists since pre-historic times, and is one of the few that would survive an atomic catastrophe. This is due to the fact that it is highly adaptable. The opposite of this happened to dinosaurs: because they were hardly adaptable they disappeared. In the dynamics of language, adaptation can be seen in the communicative interaction, in which the speaker tries to express him/herself as s/he thinks the hearer will understand, while the hearer tries to interpret what s/he hears in the sense s/he thinks was intended by the speaker. To learn a language is to adapt to the way of communication of a new speech community. Transplanted languages adapt to the new environment and so on.
EVOLUTION, called 'ecological succession' in ecology, is another characteristic of vital importance for the survival of the ecosystem. In fact, it has a lot to do with adaptation. To adapt is to evolve. To evolve is to adapt. The emergence, aging and death of an organism or species is evolution, which has no teleology. It happens randomly. The same happens to language. As Coseriu (1979) put it, language exists because it changes, it works only because it changes. Even in the acquisition of the parents' language (L1) by children there is change, since, as Mufwene (2001) put it, the child always replicates the parents' language imperfectly, that is to say, by introducing changes in it. A language that remained unchanged as prescriptive grammarians would like it to be would die in a few generations because it would not adapt, therefore it would no more fulfill the communicative needs of the new context. That is to say, evolution seems to be the reverse of the coin (heads) whose other side (tails) is adaptation.
LONG TERM VIEW is also important in ecological thinking. As has already been said, nature is not in a hurry. Therefore, it does not make sense to talk about 'protecting nature', 'defense of an ecosystem' and so on. Nature will follow its course with or without us. What we do to her (or in her) now, even what seems apparently harmless, may have serious consequences in the future. For instance, nobody knows whether she will react negatively (from our point of view) to the voracious extraction of oil from its bowels. Today we cannot perceive any consequence of this extraction. However, who could assure with certainty that there will be none in one century, or even in fifty years? Many present-day devastators of the natural landscape for kettle raising as well as for corn planting may say in the future: "Oh, if I had known that in those times!". But, then it will be to late. In this case, for our own survival it is wise to think far ahead.
Maybe this is the characteristics of ecological thinking that is the less directly applicable in language studies. However, it has a lot to do with language policy and language planning, to begin with. Let us see the case of India and China. The administrators of the former would like to have Hindi as the official language of the whole country but the speakers of the other languages do not agree. For this reason, English has been adopted for the time being. Since above all speakers of Dravidic languages continue to reject Hindi in this role, English continues to be the official language parallel to Hindi (and other languages, in some regions). In the latter there are several languages like Cantonese, Hakka and others but Chinese authorities try to impose the idea that they are simple 'dialects' of Mandarin, the only 'language of China'. Due to the Chinese well-known persistence, this idea is put forward even if there are no native speakers of Mandarin in several places of the country. In the long run this centralizing policy may have some of the desired (by the authorities) results.
As will be seen with Mark Garner below, Ecolinguistics should not adopt concepts from Ecology only as metaphors. On the contrary, they must be used as an epistemological basis, as the bricks with which a truly ecological ecolinguistics can be built. As we have seen above, the most important, central, ecological concept of ecology is 'ecosystem'. Everything in ecology is embedded in it. For this reason, we must begin our endeavor by looking for the 'linguistic ecosystem', also called 'linguistic community' in common parlance. This linguistic ecosystem consists of a people (P), living in some place that is its territory (T), and interacting verbally among themselves as is usual in this community. This 'traditional way of interacting communally' is language (L).
Long term view is intimately associated to an idea which environment managers and humans in general must always keep in mind, namely, SUSTAINABILITY. It emerged in the context of the Stockholm Conference (1972), and was reinforced in other conferences that took place after it. The outcome was the Brundtland Report - Our Common Future (1987). The basic idea is that the development to satisfy the needs of the present generations cannot lead to the impossibility of satisfying the needs of future generations. 
We have seen that Ecolinguistics should not borrow concepts from Ecology as mere metaphors. As is well known, the central and most important concept of Ecology is 'ecosystem'. Everything ecological lies it its interior. For this reason, it is advisable to start by looking for its equivalente in language studies. In other words, we should start by looking for the 'linguistic ecosystem' which, in the end, is what common sense calls 'community', sometimes 'language/linguistic community' and/or 'speech community'. It consists of a population or a people (P), living in some place which is its territory (T), and speaking its own language (L).
Linguistic ecosystem (or 'language ecosystem') can be regarded from two points of view. First of all, we can depart from the 'acts of communicative interaction' which take place inside the 'ecology of communicative interaction'. Any group of people (P) living together in a certain place or territory (T) and communicating among themselves through the usual way of communicating, their language (L), is a 'speech community' (SP). SP is generally small, what facilitates daily interaction, by the medium of words or not. However, the linguistic ecosystem may also be considered from the perspective of the system, in which case we have the 'language community' (LC). This is the domain of what commonsense calls 'language'. In this case, the domain of the Portuguese LC comprises Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor. That is to say, SP presupposes constant verbal interactions, on a daily basis, whereas LC is an abstraction because it is the domain of the system. It does not presuppose concrete interactions. They are on the side of potentialities. There is a chain of implications or embeddings that go from the 'acts of communicative interactions', which are part of the 'ecology of communicative interaction', which, on its turn, takes place inside a 'speech community'. SP is intimately related to 'language community'. LC is a kind of summation of the set of all SP related to it.
An LC may consist of a single SP, as is the case with small Amerindian communities made up of a few dozens of people or even less than that. It may also consist of thousands of SPs, as is the case with Portuguese LC. In its domain, the investigator may delimit any stretch of land (T), inhabited by a small group of people (P) which interacts verbally as is usual to interact locally.
Here is a table of equivalences between concepts of Biological Ecology and Linguistic Ecology, or Ecological Linguistics (Ecolinguistics, for short):

For this and other reasons, in Brasília we follow a few ecolinguists, such as Peter Finke, his disciple Wilhelm Trampe, besides Hans Stroher, the Odense School (Jørgen Døør, Jørgen C. Bang, Sune Steffenson etc.) who see in the ecosystem a basis for Ecolinguistics. Elsewhere we have the Catalan Albert Bastardas i Boada, Norman Denison, the British Mark Garner and others. In other words, the variety of Ecolinguistics we do came to be called Ecosystemic Linguistics.
As far as I know, Strohner (footnote) was the first to use se term "ecosystemic linguistics" in print. Following what Peter Finke had previously suggested (and soon aftre followed by Wilhelm Trampe), Strohner used the expression ökosystemische Sprachwissenschaft (ecosystemic linguistics) already in the title of his essay. Initially, he presents the 'computer metaphor', the "brain metaphor' and the 'ecosystem metaphor'. According to him, ecosystem metaphor is more in line with the present state of our knowledge. He says further that "the ecosystemic approach allows a foundation for Ecolinguistics from the theoretical and the methodological point of view. Only on this basis it is possible to give this discipline a rational praxis". For this reason, he follows "an ecosystemic theory and methodology" (p. 49). In the section "Methodology" of his essay, he uses the expression 'ecosystemic linguistics' ökosystemische Linguistik (ecosystemic linguistics) four times. As we can see, the idea of an Ecosystemic Linguistics was already in embryo in the very site of the birth of Ecolinguistics, namely, the axis Áustria-Germany.
It is true that other authors that talk about 'ecosystem' in language studies are referring to ecosystems as language systems, language groups or language families that share a specific territory, as is the case with Denison (2001) and Bastardas i Boada (2000). The former talk about "European language ecology", using "ecology" instead of 'ecosystem'. In this connection, it would be interesting to call to mind the well-known concept of Sprachbund, as the Balcanic one, for instance. The latter study the difficulties Catalan has for living together with Spanish. There is a population and a political pressure of the latter on the former. Even the "father" of Ecolinguistics, Einar Haugen (1972), departs implicitly from the ecosystem when he says that the main areas of research of the future discipline are questions such as bi-/multilingualism, language contact and others, that is to say, languages sharing a certain territory with which they would make up an ecosystem.
What is the object of Ecosystemic Linguistics? It is the branch of Ecolinguistics that studies in language everything that can be naturally explained from the concept of ecosystem and its characteristics or features. In spite of the fact that this assertion is somehow tautological, it contains several illuminating implications for Ecolinguistics. One of the most important one is the fact that for Ecosystemic Linguistics language is mainly 'communicative interaction' by means of words. As we have seen, language is the equivalent of ecological inter-relations (interactions), better, it is these interactions. Even if we want to use the "ecological metaphor", what is not the better procedure, we must depart "from the ecological point of view" as Finke (2001: 87) said, not from a mere "logical point of view" in the sense of Willard Quine. According to Adam Makkai (1993: 71), "language is not a set of 'objects' but a network of relationships". Lamb's (2000) Neurocognitive linguistics defends similar principles, albeit referring only to the endoecology (structure) of language.
There are two advantages in viewing language as a web of inter-relationships or interactions. The first one is the fact that even departing from language as 'communicative interaction', the system is implied. In fact, in order for a message sent by a speaker to a hearer to be understood by the latter it must, in principle, have been formulated in a language s/he knows. The second one is that in this case language is not reified, it is not seen as a thing located somewhere and which is an instrument (a thing) to do this or that (to communicate). When we talk about environment of language we are referring to the locus of the inter-relations (interactions) that language frame language take place. They take place in the natural, the mental and the social environment of language. When I talked about the characteristics/features of the ecosystem I have already advanced some applications of these inter-relations in language studies.
The fact is that Ecosystemic Linguistics complements some tendencies that we can see in Ecolinguistics. It is true that the majority of ecolinguistic investigations are in the realm of environmental questions, of the analysis of the pollutors' and devastators' discourse that try to appear to the public as environment-friendly, among others. A perfunctory look at the collective Ecolinguistics books reveal that circa 62% of them are in the domain of what has been called Critical Ecolinguistics, Environmental Linguistics or Ecocritical Discourse Analysis. Only 38% of them deal with linguistic phenomena departing from concepts of Ecology, i.e., the ecosystem. In the excellent web page www.ecoling.net, moderated by the competent ecolinguist Arran Stibbe, approximately 94% of the contributions are discourse analysis, so that only 6% use the ecological "metaphor". As a matter of fact, this could just as well have been done by traditional Discourse Analysis, independently of Ecolinguistics.
Two of the authors on whose ideas I am building the theory of Ecosystemic Linguistics said that Ecolinguistics should not be restricted to environmental discourse analysis and related subjects. Peter Finke (1996: 35, footnote 9) said: "the opinion of some participants of the Klagenfurt symposium, according to whom Ecolinguistics would be opposed to Systemic Linguistics, is not accepted by me nor by Strohner". He goes on to say that "an Ecolinguistics that is not built on the concept of ecosystem has no clear idea of Ecology". Strohner (1996: 58) says that "it would be an unnecessary drawback of Ecolinguistics if it deals with its subject only from the point of view of the destruction of our environment".
I would like to emphasize the name of an author from outside any group who defended something very similar to what I am proposing, namely, Mark Garner. I have seen two of his publications on the subject. The first one is Garner (2004); the other is the article "Language ecology as linguistic theory", published in an Indonesian journal (Garner 2005). According to him the full theoretical potential of Haugen's original proposal has not adequately been put to work. One of the reasons for this would be the use of ecological concepts only as metaphors. However, modern "ecological philosophy no longer sees ecology merely as a feature of the natural environment that can serve as a metaphor for other phenomena, but as a distinct way of thinking, with far-reaching implications for many disciplines, including the language sciences" (Garner 2005, p. 1). In his opinion, the most relevant features of this philosophy for language studies are, among others, holism, dynamicity, interactive, and situated.
The concept of 'ecosystem' has been used in several areas of knowledge. Nowadays we hear about 'ecosystemic ecology' and, for the present purposes, 'ecosystemic theory', 'ecosystemic thinking', besides 'systems theory', 'systemic thinking' and so on. In the realm of health expressions such as 'ecosystemic theory of communication' is relatively common, generally reporting to Gregory Bateson. In other words, Ecosystemic Linguistics came in a widespread international movement that sees reality as an immense web of inter-relationships (interactions), as is the case with biological 'ecosystem'.
In order to practice Ecosystemic Linguistics adequately we must consider every linguistic phenomenon as part of a 'linguistic ecosystem', i.e., as part of an unending web of interactions. The task of the ecolinguist is to delimit a certain sector of this web in order to examine it even microscopically, if needed. The sector that becomes the focus of interest in the moment of investigation is the result of an epistemological delimitation (coup épistemologique in French), resulting from a specific way of looking at the object of study. In the case of language studies, we have seen that any phenomena is primarily in the integral ecosystem of language. This consists of a group of individuals, or a people (P), together with the inter-relations that take place between any individual and the place or territory (T) where they live as well as between any two individuals. These inter-relations are their language. It is inside this linguistic ecosystem that we can ask the fundamental questions about language, namely, 'what is language?', 'is language a social, a mental or a natural phenomenon?", 'what is the position of language in the human species?" and so on. If we consider Ecolinguistics as the study of the relationships between language and environment, we must make explicit what this environment is all about. To begin with, there is the integral environment of language, whose locus is the integral ecosystem of language. In this case it corresponds to P and T taken together, as universal categories. P is not a specific people living in a specific territory, but an abstraction. For example, when we talk about the relationships between language and world, 'world' corresponds to P and T. Or, when we say that for there to be a language the pre-requisite is the existence of a 'people' living somewhere that speaks it. This is not the same as to say that the Kamayurá people (P) lives inside the Xingu River Reservation (T), and speaks the language (L) of the same name. In figure 1 below, we can see a graphic representation of the integral ecosystem of language, where the index 0 is destined to show that it should not be confused with the 'natural ecosystem of language' (see below). We have already seen that the 'integral ecosystem of language' of language, or 'community' in common sense,  may be regarded from the perspective of 'speech community' and of 'language community'. The discontinuous line indicates that there is no direct relation between L and T. This relation is always through P, exactly as in Peirce's sign, where there is no direct relation between sign (S) and its referent, equivalent to Ecosystemic Linguistics' territory (T). It takes place through the interpretant, equivalent of people/person (P).

Another reason for calling this language ecosystem integral is the fact that it the other three, which are more specific. The first is the natural ecosystem of language, made up of a specific people (P1), living in a specific territory (T1) and speaking its specific language (L1), as in the case of the Kamayurá people mentioned above. It is a concrete group of individuals, inhabiting the Xingu River Reservation and speaking Kamayurá language. In the same way that the Icelanders (P1) inhabit Iceland (T1), speaking Icelandic (L1). This linguistic ecosystem corresponds to what the lay-person thinks of language. Whenever s/he hears the name of a language s/he does not know, his/her first question is: 'Which people speaks this language?'. Upon hearing the answer, s/he wants to know where this people live. Everything in language that has to do with nature belongs here. For instance, its relations with the physical world, endoecological aspects such as phonetics and so one. Inside this ecosystem we find the natural environment of language, namely, P1 e T1, as concrete beings. It is shown in figure 2, where the index 1 distinguishes it from the integral ecosystem of language. As in the previous figure, the segmented line indicates that there is no direct relation between language and the world, here represented as T1.

When we focus our attention on each (or any) individual of the population (people) we see that language was formed, is stored and processed in his brain/mind. The linguistic inter-relations or interactions inside the brain of all individuals take place in the neural connections. These neural connections are the functioning of the brain, namely, the mind. All this forms the mental ecosystem of language, shown in figure 3. In this figure L2 represents language as a mental phenomenon, as a set of mental interactions (interactional rules, systemic rules or 'grammar', vocabular etc. ). P2 stands for the mind as the brain in activity. P2 corresponds to the brain of each individual of the population. These brains are the locus of 'mental language'. In this case, the mental environment of language is P2 plus T2. Again, the segmented line indicates that there is no direct relation between language as a 'set of patterns of interaction' and the individual brains. This relation is always mediated by the mind, the mental interactions.

Finally, language can be regarded as a social phenomenon (here represented by L3), as Haugen did as a sociolinguist that he was. We can see that it is formed by a population as a group of individuals organized socially (P3), whose totality makes up society (T3). L3, P3 and T3, together, form the social ecosystem of language, represented in figure 4. In this case the social environment of language is P3 and T3. As in the previous cases, the segmented line indicates that there is no direct relation between language as a social phenomenon and society. It is always mediated by the totality of individuals (collectivity) that constitutes society

The four figures above suggest that when we talk about 'environment of language' we are referring to at least four different things, corresponding to four different ways of looking at language. They are answers to four different questions. If the investigator asks a fundamental question as, for instance, whether language is a generic human way of interacting, the answer is yes. After having this fundamental answer, he may want to know whether language is a natural, a mental or a social phenomenon. All three answers will be in the affirmative. We can study language from any of these points of view. In other words, ecolinguistically language is all this at the same time. It is a biopsychosocial phenomenon. In other words, Ecosystemic Linguistics looks at language from a holistic point of view, although each investigator must delimit a narrow domain of this object as his object, but, differntly from the majority of conventional Linguistics, he does this consceious of this delimitation. Other areas of language can be studied by other investigators. Ecolinguistics is multitheoretical and multimethodological. It is an optic from where the results from these several areas can be evaluated, that is, the ecological view of the world.  
With all that in mind, and taking into consideration what has been published in collective books, I see that Ecolinguistics presents at least the following subareas and/or lines of research (I mention only a few of them, among many others).

We could also include Applied Linguistics (Fill, Trampe & Penz 2007) as well as related disciplines such as Ecosemiotics (Nöth 1998, Couto 2007: 423-433) and Ecocriticism (Glotfelty & Fromm 1996; Couto 2007: 434-442).
This list is certainly incomplete in view of the diversity of research interests that can be seen in the above collective works as well as in conferences. We have seen that Ecolinguistics sees its object as non-linearly ordered, non-closed and not simply composed of independent parts. In other words, it looks for a holistic view of language phenomena. In this case, somebody in a skeptical and critical mood could ask if if intends to be a 'theory of everything' linguistics. As a matter o fact, Ecolinguistics is a new point of view from which it is possible to study the phenomena in question. The expression 'point of view' must be emphasized. It is a new way of seeing the world. So that, in order to be good ecolinguists it is necessary to change our way of looking at the world at large. In this vein, to practice science from a Cartesian-Newtonian perspective, as in Generative Grammar, because this is like somebody who looks at the world through a window. This person manages to see few things, although he can se many details in it, microscopically. To practice science from the ecological point of view, as Peter Finke suggested, is like to place oneself on top of the house, from where one can see many things, holistically, although it is impossible to see and describe details of any of them. In this case, we are in sync with the new world-view introduced by Relativity Theory and Quantum Mechanics as early as the second decade of 20th century. It would mean being in sync with more recent theories, such as Systems Theory, Chaos Theory as well as the tiny details offered by the mathematics of fractals. As Löwy (1978) said, unfortunately from an ideological perspective, there are privileged points of view, as is the case with the top of the house and of the mountain. Whoever places himself/herself there has an all-inclusive view of his/her object of study. If he/she needs to see some detail of one specific sector of this global landscape, he/she can zoom in using one of the several subareas of linguistics (phonology, syntax etc.) and even of other sciences if needed. In this case, it is possible to study fine details of the object in question. After having the desired results, the investigator can zoom out, and go back to the top of the house. There he/she can evaluate these details in the framework of the holistic view. That is to say, he/she can study a tree (or even parts of it), but not forgetting that it is part of a forest.
This procedure has some serious methodological implications. After my presentation at the Graz conference Empirical Ecolinguistics (Graz, 2010), Josh Nash asked me which methodology we could use when doing field work. In other words, what would an 'ecolinguistic methodology' look like? Without much thinking, I answered that it would be given by the object of investigation. After having answered him, I became afraid of having said a nonsense. Later on, after reflecting more deeply on my answer, I concluded that there is no other way out. If our discipline is holistic, and looks for help from specialized knowledge and technicians, it must necessarily be trans-, inter- and multidisciplinary. Each specialized model of analysis has its specific methodology.
In this case, if we want to talk about 'ecolinguistic methodology', it is multi-methodological. In other words, the ecolinguistic investigator uses the methodology of the specific discipline that meets his necessities of the moment. When he/she goes back to his/her holistic perspective, he/she does not need this regional methodology any more. The procedure of analysis is wholly ecological, ecosystemic. We could call this procedure (ecomethodology) a kind of 'hypermethodology", or 'supermethodology'. It is like the engineer who disigns cars. The specialist in particular disciplines is like the mechanic. There are moments in which we need the latter in order to repair a flat tire. However, as soon it is repaired, the engineer assumes his true holistic stance, from where he has an idea of the whole functioning of the vehicle.
I would like to emphasize that Ecolinguistics does not transpose ecological concepts into language studies in a mechanical and naive way, as is sometimes said. At least Ecosystemic Linguistics does not use these concepts as metaphors, as most other ecolinguists do. As a matter of fact, we do ecology directly. In other words, in our view there are at least two types of Ecology, namely, Biological Ecology and Linguistic Ecology, or Ecological Linguistcs, better known as Ecolinguistics. All our scientific, methodological and heuristic tools are taken from the central concept of ecology, which is the 'ecosystem'. Therefore, the name Ecosystemic Linguistics came out naturally.
Finally, we from the Brasília School of Ecolinguistics follow a special line of research in the realm of Ecolinguistics called Ecosystemic Linguistics. This means that we do not restrict ourselves to analyze critically environmental or anti-environmental discourses. We do it too. However, we are of the opinion that that could just as well be done by regular Discourse Analysis. So much so that many European ecolinguists cite Norman Fairclough very frequently. In our opinion, what makes Ecolinguistics different from other linguistic disciplines is the fact that the former can study any linguistic phenomena by seeing them as an 'ecosystem' (linguistic ecosystem) or being part of one. We think that Ecolinguistics should study language not only in its exoecology (as defended by Haugen 1972) but also in its endoecology. This is why our special branch of Ecolinguistics came to be called Ecosystemic Linguistics.
